ABSTRACT (Download full project)
The incidence/prevalence of obesity, a nutritional disturbance that represents risk of chronic degenerative diseases, has been increasing among the various segments of the Brazilian population. The obese child is at higher risk of becoming an obese adult. The school environment is a convenient place for preventive actions, through the promotion of adequate eating habits and physical activities. The complex ethiology of this disturbance requires a multiprofessional approach. With the objective of developing a health care model with activities focused on the prevention of obesity, we propose a program that takes into account the reality of the Brazilian Public School. The target population consists of first and second grade children, from elementary Public Schools of the Vila Mariana neighborhood, in the city of São Paulo. The project includes two separate subprojects. The first one will consist of a case-control study that aims at identifying risk factors for obesity, and the second includes the design, use, and evaluation of a intervention model for the development of adequate eating habits and physical activity. For the nutritional evaluation, the authors will use anthropometric criteria and the Weight/Height ratio (W/H - obesity = W/H > +2 Z scores). Half of the total number of children evaluated in the first phase (n=800) will be exposed to the intervention program, and, in the second evaluation, the results of the two groups will be compared (exposed and not exposed groups). Procedures for the evaluation of eating behavior and physical activity patterns will be developed for the project. The intervention procedures will be applied by the school teachers after specific training provided by the project staff. The results will undergo statistical analyses, including anthropometric, socio-demographic and nutritional variables.
